Car seats and crashes: What you need to know

On Behalf of | Feb 4, 2022 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Parents know that car seats help to keep their little ones safe. One thing that many parents don’t realize is that these seats aren’t made to go through multiple crashes. If you’re involved in a crash with a car seat in the vehicle, even if the seat is empty, you may have to replace it.

Having a car seat that can adequately protect the child in it is important. It reduces the risk of a fatal injury by 54% for toddlers and 71% for infants. The effectiveness of a car seat is reduced if it’s involved in a serious crash. It may be weakened or have cracks because of the force of the crash.

Crucial points to consider

If the crash is minor, you may not have to replace the car seat. There’s a list of conditions that must be met. If even one of these isn’t met, the car seat should be replaced immediately.

  •         The car seat doesn’t have any visible damage.
  •         There weren’t any injuries in your vehicle in the crash.
  •         You could drive away from the crash.
  •         No airbags deployed in the wreck.
  •         The closest door to the car seat wasn’t damaged.

If you’ve been involved in a crash while your child was in your vehicle, you should ensure that you and the child get medical attention. It might not always be easy to know if a kid suffered an injury. You might opt to pursue a claim for compensation if the crash was the result of a negligent driver. This can include damages for things like the medical bills and other expenses directly related to the crash.
