Accidents Unique to Trucks
Since big rig trucks are so different from passenger vehicles, it is only natural that the accidents they’re involved in are also unique.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, in 2018, a total of 4,136 people were killed in the United States as a result of trucking accidents. When this number is broken down, it is seen that 16% of these deaths were experienced by truck occupants, another 67% were occupants of other vehicles, and 15% were pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorcyclists.
As the data above shows, being involved in an accident with a big truck is more likely to result in fatalities for motorists than it is for truck occupants.
Read on to learn more about accidents that are unique to big trucks.
The following types of accidents tend to be unique to big rig trucks:
- Rollover wrecks - In passenger vehicles, most rollover crashes occur when the driver is speeding. In trucks, it is more common for a rollover to happen when the truck is maneuvering around a turn or going up or down a steep hill. When the truck begins to roll, the driver loses control over the vehicle and catastrophic damage is likely to impact anyone in its path.
- Jackknife crashes - These accidents may be the result of unfavorable road conditions, inappropriate braking, or defective equipment. The end result of these kinds of accidents is the trailer’s cab facing one direction and the trailer is facing another.
- Underside accidents - This happens when a truck is forced to stop suddenly and the car behind drives right underneath it. These kinds of accidents usually result in the death of the passenger vehicle’s driver, as well as the absolute devastation of the passenger vehicle.
